Staunton State Park, August 26-29, 2021

I planned this camping trip because Staunton was having a half marathon on August 28.  We loved camping at Staunton last year and I used the race as an excuse to go back.  Luckily, we had Marion join us this year.  We really enjoy our time with her.

I woke up at 6am on Saturday and only had to walk a little ways to the start of the race.  I saw a few of my friends there.  I really didn’t feel well prepared for the race because I have really been focusing on triathlons.  When I started the race, I stayed in the lead pack.  I did really well on the uphill but would get passed on the downhill.  It sounds counterintuitive to do better on the downhill but downhill is hard because you have to know how to bounce off of rocks without falling.  Thankfully, everyone that passed me on the downhill I passed on the uphill before the end of the race.660882904461836288_1

I never checked results after the race because I wanted to spend time with the family while camping.  But, when I got home, I saw that I actually set a course record.

When I got back to the campsite, Marion had made the girls breakfast and Lola was getting teased by squirrels.  Those squirrels were actually throwing acorns at Lola and our tents.

Wayne arrived around 11am and we spent a couple hours together at the campsite.  Then, us girls went on a walk down the mason creek trail and let Lola play around in the creek.

We did some reading and a lot of eating.  We brought our propane fire pit since Staunton doesn’t allow fires.  We are really enjoying having that.

I loved the time sitting around the fire and talking.  We all got to know each other well.

We put up our hammock in the trees to read and rock back and forth.

Our campsite was secluded and surrounded by trees but it was quite a walk to the bathroom and trash.  We walked a lot on this trip.

The girls love talking girl talk with Auntie Marion.

The weather was perfect.  Even though we really need the rain, the heat and dryness has made it perfect for camping.

Meanwhile, while us girls were all camping, Lloyd and Connor went to Leadville and Connor was named the fastest Freshmen mountain biker!
