Colorado Rockies Home Run for the Homeless 5k
Running a 5k at this time was not in my plan. I have been focusing on long runs with no focus on short bursts of speed. My kids had found out that there was going to be a 5k at our neighborhood park on May 1st and I signed them up. A 5k was in their plan and they started training. They ran laps around the neighborhood, the park, the Rock, and with the doggies.
A week before the race, we found out that it was cancelled. When I told them, they said, "We have been practicing for nothing?" I heard an advertisement on the radio for "Colorado Rockies Home Run for the Homeless 5k" It sounded perfect! Everyone gets to run around Coors field, gets Rockies tickets and shirts, hot dogs, raises money for the homeless, and 5,000 people were expected at the event. I registered for this one to replace the cancelled race.
I was a little divided on whether I should run with the kids or try to win the race. I decided to let them run on their own, since they all run at different speeds. I also wanted to win a Rockies trophy, since I already have a Bronco's trophy, Rock n Roll trophy, and Colfax trophy. They only give trophies to the top 3 male and female runners, so I had to run as fast as I could.
At the start line, I saw 2 other sponsored runners that looked like they were fast. Fabletics Boulder sponsored one and Runners Roost sponsored the other. I started off fast and the girl sponsored by Fabletics passed me early on. She stayed about 30 seconds ahead of me the entire race. I passed a few men but didn't see any other women. I saw Lloyd at mile 2, cheering, which made me smile. The last .5-mile went around Coors Field, which was a lot of fun.
I finished in 20:43. It was not a PR, but I was 2nd overall female, 30 seconds behind the girl that passed me and 14 seconds ahead of the Runners Roost girl. I finished and ran to get to Connor so I could finish with him. When I got to him, he said his feet were hurting and I talked him though it and told him to focus on the scenery. He finished in 41:06, which is faster than his last 4 races.
We then ran back to run with Camilla. I was so proud of Connor for encouraging and cheering Camilla on. She finished in 57:07, with a big smile on her face.
Carly has more fun walking and finding different things on the ground than she did running.
Lloyd ran with Carly for the last mile and she finished in 59:42.
The after party was fun and the kids got lots of Rockies stuff, hot dogs, and games. We also got free tickets for a Rockies game on June 1st. I won a bobble head and autographed baseball.
This race sure gives a lot out to all the runners! This was such a fun way to start off a great Mothers Day and I had a blast with my Mom and Grandma, in the afternoon.
