Cruisers Prelims for Carly and Camilla
I went into the preliminaries feeling very nervous for two reasons. The first reason was the fact that I was required to be a stroke and turn judge and Lloyd had to work. So, I had no family available to help the kids get ready for their swim events. It can be really difficult figuring out when to line up and not miss events. The second reason I was nervous was, because I was afraid one of the kids would have hurt feelings. It was really unlikely that all of the kids were going to make it to Championships and I was afraid that some kids would make it and other kids would not.
I was able to get all the kids to their events while also being a Stroke and Turn judge, so that worked out well. The kids learned some responsibility so that they can do some of this stuff by themselves.
Carly swam freestyle and made it into Championships right away. Camilla did not. Then, Carly swam backstroke and made it to Championships for that event. Camilla only missed her spot into Championships in backstroke by just two girls. So, I was crossing my fingers that she would make it to championships in breaststroke.
Then, something really disappointing happened. I was standing there being a stroke and turn judge and heard the judge next to me, who I have never liked, disqualify Camilla. The judge said Camilla readjusted her goggles right when she jumped in. I never saw her adjust her goggles! When I told Camilla that she was disqualified, she swore that she never stopped to adjust her goggles. So, I fought for her. I went up to the meet officials and explained the situation. They told me that it was the other judge's word against mine. Since I wasn't a judge for Camilla's lane, I just let it go. But, Camilla was pretty upset. I was upset too, since I have never agreed with disqualifying a kid for adjusting their goggles. I see kids swimming with goggles around their necks because they aren't allowed to adjust their goggles.
Camilla
Backstroke 30:27 (Previous time 36:83)
Freestyle-30:33 (Previous time 32:41)
But, on the bright side, Camilla learned a good lesson today. Things aren't always fair. She also learned to be happy for her sister, who made it to championships for all 3 events: breaststroke, backstroke, and freestyle. In order to qualify for Championships, the swimmer must finish in 16th place or less.
Carly came in 9th in Freestyle 29:92 (Previous time 31:98), 6th in Backstroke 32:09 (Previous time 37:26), and 2nd in Breaststroke 36:32 (Previous time 38:65)
