Broncos 7k
Stitches are out and I got to race again! I had a good training run on the day before the race and had my first Mountain Lion encounter. Lola tried to charge at him but came right back to me when I yelled, "Come!". The mountain lion ran away. That was really cool!
I had to cancel my triathlon last weekend because I had stitches and couldn't risk getting the wound infected. I was pretty bummed so the Broncos 5k was even more special.
I ran the Broncos 7k last year in 30:11 and won a cool Broncos helmet for 1st place age group. This year, I wanted to get faster. I was going to try to get less than 30 minutes. I registered the kids for the kid's race and they were very excited to come in their Broncos jerseys and meet players and Broncos players.
Lloyd and the kids watched me start and it was so fun to see the kids get excited. I saw one girl that looked like she could beat me. She was younger and had more muscle. When we started, she stayed at my exact same pace. Then, 2 girls passed both of us. I knew that I couldn't make myself go any faster, so I just tried to run my own race. I kept a pretty consistent 6:40 pace. I was hurting pretty bad. My lungs were burning and I felt like my legs were on fire. It took some mental strategies to put that out of my mind. I waved at Lloyd and the kids when I got close to the finish line and then I saw another female out of the corner of my eye. She was coming really fast behind me. I knew I needed to speed up. I ended up keeping her behind and I finished just 4 seconds ahead of her.
That put me 1st in my Age Group and I got a 50 second PR. I finished in 29:19 and was very happy with that time. I also found out that the 3 girls ahead of me were all 10 years younger than me.
The kids got to do all kinds of cool things in the stadium like do a pedometer competition, throw footballs, make origami, and get a massage. When it was time for their race, Lloyd ran with the girls and I ran with Connor.
I stood up at the start line with Connor and we got to watch "Miles the Mascot" do tricks on a scooter. The announcer noticed that I was wearing a "Girls on the Run" singlet and he announced that the race loves Girls on the Run. Lots of people walked up to me and asked about Girls on the Run. I did my job as an ambassador!
Their race was ¼ mile and they all tried their best. They got to see themselves on the Jumbotron when they crossed the finish line.
