End of Triathlon and Camping Season, September 26, 2021

Triathlon and camping season is usually over in August but this summer has been exceptionally hot so triathlon season was still going strong.  I was supposed to go on a trip to Fruita with the family but that got cancelled.  So, I was able to find 2 more triathlons to do.

Camilla came with me to Longmont on the morning of 9/19 for Oktoberfest triathlon.  We woke up at 5:30am to get there.  She helped me get my wetsuit on and watched Lola for an hour and 20 minutes while I did the triathlon.

It was perfect weather and I felt very comfortable.  I am really starting to like triathlons a lot.

I was really impressed with my time because I finished 3 minutes faster than the previous time I did this course only 1 month before.  I was also better on the bike than the swim, which means I am working on my weakness.  Camilla and I had special time together and I took her out to breakfast.

The next triathlon I registered for was 1 week later and Carly came with me to this one.  When we arrived, I rented us paddle boards right away.

We camped in Longmont and their paddle board rentals are only $25 an hour.  We put a lifejacket on Lola and took her out with us.

She has only been on a paddle board once and she was pretty anxious the 1st time.  This time, she was completely comfortable.

I was so glad that I put a lifejacket on her because she fell off a few times and we just used the handles on her lifejacket to pull her up.

Carly fell off once too.

This triathlon was nice because I was able to open water swim the night before and get used to the water.

I registered for the ELITE category and was really nervous.  But Carly and I had so much fun camping.  We paddle boarded, swam, played frisbee, and sat in front of the fire.

Carly actually fell asleep in the camp chair in front of the fire at 8pm.  We went to bed early and the campground was very quiet and we were able to sleep.

It got a little cold at night but was warm in the morning.

I was able to sleep in until 7am and just walk over the the start of the triathlon.

Carly helped me zip up my wetsuit and I just jumped in with the elite folks.

The swim wasn’t too bad but I couldn’t figure out why the did a paddle board race right behind the elite race.  I thought I was gonna get hit in the head with a paddle.

The swim was a bit shallow but I was able to see the course just fine.

Lloyd put aerobars on my bike to make me faster but they came loose during the triathlon.  I at least was able to get a little used to using them.

I really loved Boyd lake for camping and playing, but I didn’t like the triathlon course as much.  The road was a bit bumpy and there were a lot of turns.

The run portion was ½ pavement and ½ dirt.

I managed to get 1st in the ELITE category and it was a great way to end the triathlon season.  Now I just have to find another goal to shoot for.
